What is a Strobe Light?

"Strobe Light"" usually refers to four similar electronic devices that emits bright white flashes at variable intervals. :

Entertainment Strobe Lights: These type of strobe lights are usually used in nightclubs, concerts, movies, haunted houses or other entertainment purposes. Entertainment strobe lights come in all shapes and sizes. Professional models can usually be controlled remotely using the DMX protocol and allow the operator to control the speed and sometimes the brightness and duration of flash.
Scientific Strobe Lights: A lighting fixture similar to above, but used in scientific experiments. Scientific strobe lights are oftentimes used to study motion of objects. These strobe lights are often capable of flashing at a very high speed, so quickly that they may appear to be continuously on.
Photographic Strobe Lights: A photographic lighting device. Some photographers refer to a normal camera flash as a strobe and others refer to either of the above strobes, which are oftentimes utilized for special effects photography.
Emergency Strobe Lights are the flashing lights found on emergency vehicles (like police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks) or are signal devices used to help rescuers find the location of a stranded person.

Most strobe lights work by discharging a high electrical voltage into a glass lamp filled with xenon gas. Some newer models are utilizing white LEDs to achieve the same effect, but with far less power input requirements and more flexibility. Either technology produces a very bright white flash.

All strobe lights are designed to flash at a regular intervals and some advanced fixtures even allow the operator to control the duration and brightness of each flash. These aspects of a strobe light can be controlled via a control panel on the fixture and many professional strobe lights can be operated remotely, usually by DMX protocol.
